Mountain West · Fly into Salt Lake City
Zion's canyon walls, Bryce's hoodoos at dawn, Arches at golden hour.
The route
Fly into Salt Lake City and drive south — 4.5 hours to Zion, but the landscape starts changing fast. Zion first: Angels Landing (chains section, serious but doable for older kids), The Narrows wading hike, and Emerald Pools for younger ones. Switchback up to Bryce Canyon for the hoodoos — Inspiration Point at sunrise is the photograph that earns the drive. East through Grand Staircase to Moab: Delicate Arch at sunset (3-mile round trip, worth every step), Dead Horse Point for the Colorado River panorama, and Canyonlands for the scale. Rent a Jeep for one day and go off-road. This is the American Southwest at its best — drive windows down.
👨👩👧👦 Kids angle
America the Beautiful annual pass ($80) covers entry to all five parks — essential buy. Junior Ranger programs at every park. Pa'rus Trail in Zion is paved and stroller-friendly. Bryce Canyon shuttle system means no car stress. Moab has sand dunes kids can run on at Little Sahara.
🚗 Rental car
AWD recommended for any unpaved roads near Moab. A standard SUV handles all park roads fine. Stock up on water and snacks in Springdale (Zion) — provisions get sparse between parks.
