South · Fly into Austin
Austin live music on 6th Street, bluebonnets on the Hill Country highway, River Walk at dusk.
The route
Austin has changed dramatically but the bones remain: breakfast tacos are still the correct first meal (Juan in a Million or Veracruz All Natural), South Congress for the hotels and vintage shops, Barton Springs Pool for the natural swimming hole that locals live around, and 6th Street for the live music that actually gets going around midnight. Drive west on US-290 — past Johnson City (LBJ's ranch), Fredericksburg with its German bakeries and Hill Country wineries, and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area for the pink granite dome that kids scramble over and geologists admire. South on 281 to San Antonio: the River Walk at sunset (more beautiful than expected), the Alamo (smaller than expected), and the Pearl District for dinner. The mission trail by bike for the morning.
👨👩👧👦 Kids angle
Enchanted Rock is perfect family hiking — open rock scrambling with safety, great views, and a summit kids feel proud of. Natural Bridge Caverns near San Antonio is genuinely spectacular underground. San Antonio's River Walk boat tours are a family staple. Austin's Children's Museum has an entire floor of Texas-themed play. Jacob's Well swimming hole in Wimberley is a magical Texas secret.
🚗 Rental car
Car essential. Texas distances are real — Austin to Fredericksburg is 80 miles, Fredericksburg to San Antonio another 70. Standard sedan fine for all Hill Country routes. Free parking almost everywhere outside Austin proper.
