Southwest · Fly into Phoenix
Scottsdale spa morning, Sedona vortex hike, Grand Canyon at sunrise.
The route
Fly into Phoenix and spend a night in Scottsdale for the reset — the Phoenician or Andaz Scottsdale, rooftop pool, Old Town dinner. Drive north to Sedona: Cathedral Rock at dusk, Boynton Canyon hike, and an off-road Jeep tour into the backcountry that even reluctant hikers enjoy. Up through Oak Creek Canyon — one of Arizona's most scenic drives — to the Grand Canyon. Arrive late afternoon, watch the sunset from Mather Point, wake up for sunrise at Yavapai Point. The scale is genuinely incomprehensible until you're standing at the rim. Bright Angel Trail for as far as legs allow — one mile down feels like a different world.
👨👩👧👦 Kids angle
Grand Canyon Junior Ranger program is one of the best in the NPS. Bright Angel Trail's first mile to the 1.5 Mile Resthouse is very doable with kids 6+. Sedona's Pink Jeep Tours specifically offer family-friendly adventure routes. Scottsdale's OdySea Aquarium is excellent for a recovery afternoon.
🚗 Rental car
Standard SUV or sedan fine for these paved routes. Jeep Wrangler available if you want to go off-road in Sedona (optional, not required). Gas up in Flagstaff before the Grand Canyon — prices inside the park are punishing.
Season by season
🍂 fall
Perfect hiking weather. Sedona crowds ease after Labor Day. Grand Canyon autumn light is exceptional.
❄️ winter
Mild and sunny in Phoenix/Sedona. Grand Canyon South Rim gets snow — surreal and beautiful.
🌸 spring
Wildflowers in March. Easter weekend crowds at Sedona — book ahead or go a week earlier.
☀️ summer
Phoenix is brutal (115°F+). Sedona manageable at 6,000ft in mornings. Canyon hiking dangerous — fatal heat risk. Avoid June–August.
