Pacific Northwest · Fly into Seattle
Pike Place fish toss, Hoh Rainforest moss, orca watching in the San Juans.
The route
Seattle for one night: Pike Place early for the fish throw and fresh Dungeness crab, the original Starbucks (queue for the photo, don't linger), ferry views of the Olympic Mountains. Drive west across the Hood Canal Bridge onto the Olympic Peninsula — a place most Americans have never visited despite being spectacular. Hurricane Ridge for mountain meadows and deer. The Hoh Rainforest for the Hall of Mosses — a genuinely otherworldly temperate rainforest. Ruby Beach for sea stacks and driftwood. Back east to Mt Rainier — Paradise Visitor Center is aptly named, with Rainier's glaciated peak above wildflower meadows. End with a Washington State Ferry to the San Juan Islands for whale watching (orca pods resident in summer).
👨👩👧👦 Kids angle
Olympic National Park has three distinct ecosystems (rainforest, mountain, coast) in one park — genuinely educational. Orca watching in the San Juans is a bucket-list family experience. Junior Rangers at both Olympic and Rainier. The ferry system across Puget Sound is a transportation experience kids love.
🚗 Rental car
Mid-size SUV recommended — some Olympic Peninsula roads are unpaved. No ferry reservations needed for most crossings but arrive 30 min early in summer. Cell coverage patchy on the peninsula — download offline maps.
