Pacific Northwest · Fly into Portland
Portland food carts, Multnomah Falls, Crater Lake's impossible blue, Pacific sunset.
The route
Portland is a genuine food city — the cart pods in downtown for breakfast, Blue Star Donuts, and an evening at Pok Pok or Ava Gene's. East on Historic Highway 30 through the Columbia River Gorge: Multnomah Falls at dawn (before the crowds), Crown Point, and the Vista House. Crater Lake is a 3-hour drive south but the payoff is the bluest water you will see anywhere — a 1,900-foot-deep caldera lake formed by a volcanic collapse 7,700 years ago. Back north and west to the Oregon Coast: Cannon Beach for Haystack Rock and tide pools, Oswald West for old-growth headlands, and Lincoln City for the widest beach in Oregon. Dungeness crab from a roadside shack for dinner.
👨👩👧👦 Kids angle
Crater Lake rim drive is a car experience accessible to all ages. Tide pooling at Cannon Beach is a hands-on science class. Portland's Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI) is excellent for a rainy afternoon. The gorge waterfall hike to Multnomah is 2.4 miles round trip — very doable with kids 5+.
🚗 Rental car
Standard sedan handles all routes. Oregon Coast Highway 101 is entirely paved and very accessible. Crater Lake entry requires America the Beautiful Pass or $35 per vehicle.
