New Orleans is unlike anywhere in America — a Caribbean city that ended up on the Mississippi Delta, shaped by French, Spanish, African, and Creole cultures into a place with its own food, music, and rules. Three nights: the French Quarter for the architecture and Café Du Monde beignets, Magazine Street for the real New Orleans life, Commander's Palace for the jazz brunch (reserve weeks ahead), and Frenchmen Street for live music that actually starts at 10pm and keeps going. Drive west to Cajun Country: a swamp tour through the Atchafalaya Basin for alligators, egrets, and cypress trees draped in Spanish moss. Lafayette's food scene (try Prejean's for the boudin) and the Vermilionville folk museum for context. East to the Gulf Coast for a night — quiet, wide beaches, seafood directly off the boat.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Kids angle

Swamp tours are a top-10 family experience — guide puts a baby alligator in kids' hands (with permission). The National WWII Museum in New Orleans is the best war museum in the country. Café Du Monde beignets + powdered sugar everywhere is a food memory kids keep. The Children's Museum in City Park is excellent. Streetcar rides are transportation kids love.

🚗 Rental car

Skip the car in New Orleans proper — park at the hotel and walk/streetcar everywhere. Rent only for the day-trip to Cajun Country and Gulf Coast. Parking in the Quarter is expensive and stressful.
