Southwest · Fly into Albuquerque
Albuquerque balloons, Santa Fe gallery district, Taos Pueblo at dusk.
The route
Land in Albuquerque and feel the altitude immediately — 5,300ft. Old Town for the morning, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center for context, and a green chile cheeseburger at the Owl Bar (drive south if you have to — it's worth it). Drive the Turquoise Trail to Santa Fe: Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Canyon Road galleries, the Palace of the Governors, and the best green chile stew in the state at the Shed. The Plaza is a genuine town square where locals still gather. North to Taos on the High Road — mission churches and mountain villages — for the Taos Pueblo (oldest continuously inhabited community in North America), the Rio Grande Gorge, and dinner at Joseph's.
👨👩👧👦 Kids angle
Taos Pueblo is a living World Heritage Site — guided tours with kids are genuinely moving. Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta (October) is one of the great kid experiences in the country. Santa Fe's Museum of International Folk Art has incredible interactive galleries. Green chile on everything — kids either love it or you learn their heat tolerance fast.
🚗 Rental car
Standard sedan handles all routes fine. Rental car is essential — public transit nonexistent outside Albuquerque. Santa Fe is extremely walkable once you're there.
