Freedom Trail through Boston history, Vermont hills in peak foliage, lobster rolls on the Maine dock.
The route
Boston for one day — the Freedom Trail is a genuine history walk, not a tourist trap: Paul Revere's house, Old South Meeting House, and Bunker Hill. Clam chowder at Legal Sea Foods, cannoli in the North End (Mike's or Modern, no wrong answer). Drive north through southern Vermont: the Connecticut River valley, Woodstock (the most picture-perfect New England village), and up to Stowe at the base of Mt Mansfield. October turns the entire drive into a color-saturated unreality — pull over at any overlook. East to coastal Maine: Portland is one of America's best small food cities (Eventide Oyster Co., The Honey Paw). Take the ferry to Peaks Island for a bike ride, and head up to Acadia if you have an extra day. Drive the Park Loop Road to Thunder Hole and the Beehive Trail.
👨👩👧👦 Kids angle
Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile self-guided walk with markers — manageable for kids 7+. Vermont's Cold Hollow Cider Mill in October gives out free samples and has cider donuts. Acadia's carriage roads are excellent for family biking. Maine lobster boats offer kid-friendly tours in Stonington. Boston's Children's Museum sits right on the waterfront.
🚗 Rental car
Car essential outside Boston. Vermont back roads are small and beautiful — go slow. Maine Route 1 in summer has serious traffic — leave early. Acadia's Park Loop Road has paid access.
