The route
Minneapolis is consistently underrated — the Walker Art Center rivals coastal institutions, the Guthrie Theater has the best cantilever view of the Mississippi, and the food scene (local farm ingredients + Scandinavian + Hmong) is surprising and specific. One night, then north on Highway 61 — Bob Dylan's road — to Duluth at the head of Lake Superior. Lift Bridge, Canal Park, and the Great Lakes Aquarium. North Shore Drive to Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse. Into the Boundary Waters: a million acres of wilderness canoe country with 1,200 lakes and portages connecting them, no motors allowed, and a silence that recalibrates everything. Base in Ely for outfitter rentals and guided half-day paddles if you don't want to commit to a multi-day.

Car essential. Minneapolis to Ely is 3.5 hours — plan for a North Shore lunch break. Bring bear canister and bug spray for Boundary Waters (regulations require food storage). Cell coverage ends north of Two Harbors — offline maps essential.
