The route
Two hours north of New York City, the Hudson Valley has quietly become one of the best food regions in the country — farm-to-table is not a trend here, it's the infrastructure. Rhinebeck for the Beekman Arms (America's oldest inn, operating since 1766), Gigi Market and Café for the farm dinner, and Hyde Park for the Roosevelt estate and the CIA culinary school lunch. Into the Catskills: Woodstock for the mythology and the weekly art galleries, Phoenicia for tubing the Esopus Creek (summer) and the excellent trout fishing. North-South Lake Campground for the best Catskills hike. West to the Finger Lakes for the day: Seneca and Cayuga for the Rieslings, the Watkins Glen gorge trail (arguably the best state park gorge in the country), and Dr. Frank's wine for the benchmark.

Catskills creek tubing is a pure summer joy for kids. Minnewaska State Park has a lake with cliff jumping (for older kids) and swimming from a rock ledge. Watkins Glen gorge is a 2-mile paved trail through 19 waterfalls — accessible for most kids. Apple picking at Migliorelli Farm in the valley.
🚗 Rental car
Car essential — no public transit to most of this. Standard sedan fine. The Taconic State Parkway is beautiful but narrow — don't rush it. Finger Lakes is a full day's side trip — manageable but long.
