Mountain West · Fly into Denver
Denver RiNo art district, elk in Rocky Mountain NP, and first ski runs in Vail.
The route
Land in Denver and let the altitude hit you before you hit the mountains — one night in RiNo for craft beer, Union Station, and Red Rocks at sunset (even without a show). Drive the Peak to Peak Highway into Rocky Mountain National Park: elk herds at Moraine Park, Alpine Visitor Center above 11,000ft, and Trail Ridge Road across the tundra. Down into Estes Park for a night, then west to Vail or Breckenridge. In summer: gondola rides, mountain biking, and the blue waters of Dillon Reservoir. In winter: ski school at 9am, hot chocolate by 3pm, fondue by 7. The Colorado formula works at every age.
👨👩👧👦 Kids angle
Junior Ranger programs at RMNP (free badge, kids love them). Gondola rides work for all ages. Ski school from age 3 in Vail. Tubing hills in Breckenridge for non-skiers. At altitude — keep kids hydrated and watch for headaches.
🚗 Rental car
AWD or 4WD strongly recommended — mountain passes can be snowy even in early summer. Most rental companies at DEN offer SUVs. Do not show up in a Corolla in January.
Season by season
☀️ summer
Peak wildflower season in RMNP. Trail Ridge Road fully open. Book campsites 6 months ahead.
❄️ winter
Vail and Breck at their best — ski schools, bunny slopes, tubing for little ones.
🌸 spring
Trail Ridge Road may be snow-closed until late May. Lower trails beautiful.
🍂 fall
Aspen gold in September — one of the great American seasonal spectacles. Cooler, less crowded.
