Chicago is a top-5 American city and criminally underrated in travel — the architecture alone justifies the trip. Chicago Architecture Center river cruise first morning. Millennium Park (free, Bean, free concerts), Navy Pier for kids, the Art Institute for the Seurat and the Chagall windows. Deep-dish at Lou Malnati's (the Malnati family original beats Giordano's, fight me). North across the Wisconsin border to Door County: the peninsula between Green Bay and Lake Michigan, famous for cherry orchards, fish boils, and genuinely good art galleries in Fish Creek. Ephraim for the sunset over Eagle Harbor. Ferry to Washington Island if time allows. Cross back into Michigan to Sleeping Bear Dunes: the dune climb to the ridge above Lake Michigan is one of those American physical experiences that requires you to earn the view. Chicago's Shedd Aquarium is world-class. Millennium Park is a free outdoor playground. Door County's fish boil is a theatrical dining experience kids find fascinating. Sleeping Bear Dunes climb is a classic — the dune is 450 feet of loose sand and coming down is half the fun. Michigan Great Lakes beaches have zero jellyfish and excellent swimming.

Car essential for Door County and Michigan legs. Chicago is best navigated by L train and walking — don't drive in the city. Park at the hotel for the Chicago nights and rent fresh for the drive north.
