The route
Asheville sits at the center of the Blue Ridge and is one of America's genuine art towns — not performed art, actual art. River Arts District studios open to visitors, the Grove Park Inn for the sunset view, and a food scene anchored by the Table and Curate (a Spanish wine bar that has no business being this good in western North Carolina). Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway north: every overlook earns its pull-off, especially in October when the hardwood canopy turns amber and gold from Virginia to Georgia. East to the Outer Banks — the narrow barrier islands that stretch 200 miles along the North Carolina coast. Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kill Devil Hills, Cape Hatteras lighthouse, wild Spanish mustangs at Corolla, and the undeveloped beaches of Cape Lookout only reachable by ferry.

Wright Brothers site at Kill Devil Hills is hands-down the best aviation history site in the country — kids can walk the exact flight path. Wild Spanish mustangs (descendants of 16th-century horses) roam freely near Corolla — guided tours by 4WD beach vehicle. Asheville's Climb-It interactive climbing gym is excellent for active kids. Sliding Rock waterfall in Pisgah is a natural water slide into a swimming hole.
🚗 Rental car
AWD helpful for driving on Outer Banks beaches (optional — you can stay on paved roads). Blue Ridge Parkway is entirely paved. No gas stations on the Parkway itself — fill up in Asheville and again when you leave.
